Star Island Searchlight and Radar Station - Location 140

Star Island in 1940 was a proposed location for a coast artillery radar and searchlight station, but was cancelled before 1941.
No permanent military structures were ever built on Star Island during World War II. It is possible, however, that one or both of the mobile searchlights assigned to Location 141 (Appledore Island) may have first been emplaced here by mid December 1941 and into January 1942 during the post-Pearl Harbor panic, before being relocated. The Oceanic Hotel (and all of the Isles of Shoals) was closed and off-limits to public access from late December 1941 until July 1946. A sole caretaker remained on the island, and the U.S. Coast Guard also maintained a small barracks or bunkhouse on the island during the war.
